Mini Shabby Chic Shutter with Wreath Accent

You will not believe how inexpensive this Mini Shabby Chic Shutter with Wreath Accent was to make! I made the entire project for less than $5! For this month’s Thrift Store Challenge, I decided to venture to a different store than the usual Goodwill. The one I chose is far smaller, but they had such an incredible selection of nice furniture and decor items, with no “junk” as fillers. As an added bonus, 100% of the proceeds earned go directly to a new animal sanctuary being built in our county. I know where I’ll be donating items next time, too. So, while there, I found a pair of super cute mini shutters, three matching four space frames, and a cute picket fence planter. Let me show you how I used one of the mini shutters.

Mini Shabby Chic Shutter with Wreath Accent Steps

1: Make sure your shutter is clean and free of dust and particles (mine was pretty grungy) and then spray paint it with the white Chalked spray paint. I applied two coats, letting the paint dry in between.

2: Lightly sand some of the areas to remove a little of the paint. Mine already had this done, so I just sanded in the already exposed areas. Clean off any paint dust.

3: If you like, lightly spray one coat of the sealer.
I’m not sure if I used it wrong or what, but once this sealer dried, it turned part of the paint yellowish. I didn’t like that, so I sprayed another layer of paint on it. I forgot to sand it a second time, but I actually like the way it looks as is. In person, you can still see some of the darker areas where the wood is showing through.

4: Now spray paint the front, back and all sides of the willow wreath with the Chalked spray. I tried to cover most of the brown.

5: Once all the paint has dried, clip 3-inch stems from your faux flowers and bend the stems at the base at a 90° angle.

6: Poke and weave the flower stems into the painted willow wreath in a cluster at the bottom.

7: Tie a 6-inch piece of white ribbon onto the wreath in a loop.

8: Position the wreath on the front of the shutter and then bring the ribbon loop over the top and onto the back. Use a staple gun or flat thumbtack to secure the ribbon to the back of the shutter.
I did this part after my family was asleep, so I elected not to use my staple gun and scare the crud out of them. Since I didn’t have any flat thumbtacks, I just used a piece of duct tape temporarily. Shhh…I’ll staple it tomorrow.

That’s it! I know I didn’t massively alter my original find to make this Mini Shabby Chic Shutter with Wreath project, but let’s be honest, those shutters were cute but sad and dingy, to begin with. Just hanging them up as is would have looked super boring to me, so I decided to give them a bright, feminine touch. I’m saving the other one for fall decor and might make a mini cotton plant wreath for it. So what do you think? What would you have done with this pair of mini shutters? Since I didn’t glue the wreath on, I can easily swap out accents with new inspiration.

  1. What a find & I love that the proceeds go to animals. I would have made exactly what you made. I love the idea of changing out the wreath for the different seasons. Shutters are on my thrift dream list- haha! Those florals are beautiful! I also can’t wait to try the chalk spray paint when the weather finally warms up.

  2. So pretty! I’ve passed by those grapevine wreaths so many times in thrift stores because I just never know how to make them look better, but you nailed it! This is so lovely for Spring, great makeover!
