Embellished Button Covered Monogram Letter

I know, I know, a Button Covered Monogram Letter isn’t exactly breaking the mold in terms of original crafty ideas, but I thought I’d add a slightly different element by using something I tried back in October to make my Bejeweled Skull Halloween Decor video—filling in the empty spaces with smaller items like chunky glitter, tiny beads, and smaller rhinestones. I think it creates a more interesting piece and definitely adds some sparkle.

So why red? This project is a small part of a larger one where I’m creating ten different monogram letters using completely different crafting techniques to spell B-E  I-N-S-P-I-R-E-D, all in red, blue, and yellow, the accent colors in my Wonder Woman craft room. So far, I’ve created the B, R, P, I, and E. You can find the tutorials for those here:

Embellished Button Covered Monogram Letter Steps

1: Paint your wood monogram with the color of your choice, including the sides. I used Martha’s Tartan Red. I painted two coats to get full coverage. Let each coat dry completely before moving on. In retrospect, I wish I had used spray paint. It would have dried much faster and smoother.

2: Select the buttons you’d like to use and lay them out on your letter to see what the best placement will be and move them around as needed. You want to use a variety of sizes, shapes, and styles.

TIP: If your button has one of those little posts with the holes on the back, you can either snip it off with utility scissors or glue it on as is to give it a little height above the other buttons.

3: Use the Clear Tacky Glue to stick the buttons to your chosen spots. Let the letter dry laying flat completely before moving it. The glue will dry pretty quickly, but until it does, the buttons can slide around.

4: Now fill in any of the larger empty spots with the rhinestones and glue. Let those dry completely.

5: Finish off by applying glue to any unembellished areas and then add the chunky glitter. Do this is small sections. Once the glue has dried, turn it upside down to gently tap off any unstuck glitter.

That’s it! I swear the most time-consuming part of this whole project was waiting for the paint and glue to dry. This Embellished Button Covered Monogram Letter was a blast to make, just like the skull. I find it satisfying to fill in all of the blank spaces and that chunky glitter is a lot easier to direct to specific spots, unlike its fine glitter cousin. If glitter and sparkle aren’t your jam, you could easily fill in the smaller areas with beads and tiny seed beads in a more satin sheen.
