DIY Flower Petal Garland

Have you ever planned a party and went to Pinterest to find all sorts of inspiration for how you want to decorate? Yeah, me, too! When I planned Aleisha’s Garden Tea Party Baby Shower, I must have started pinning ideas the day she told me she was pregnant. Neither of us cared that she was having a boy, we wanted her to have a girly party, lol. There were so many wonderful ideas, but one that stuck out to me was this Ombre Rose Petal Garland pin from Etsy. Of course, there was no way I was spending $300, so I knew I had to make my own DIY Flower Petal Garland. Unfortunately, I could never find instructions, so I had to reverse engineer how to do it myself. That’s kind of my thing, though, so I didn’t mind.

DIY Flower Petal Garland Steps

1. Measure out and cut a length of thread to match what you need for your garland plus 12 inches. Loop the thread and triple knot it. Thread the needle with the other end.

2. Select a petal and position it so the petal curves up.

3. Poke the needle through the bottom of the petal and pull it down to the knot.

4. Position the next petal so that it curves down and thread through the bottom of that one. The goal is to keep the petals from “spooning” into each other. We want them to fill out the space on the string.

5. Repeat over and over and over again (take a nap then thread some more) until you have threaded enough petals to suit how full you want your garland. The original inspiration positioned the petals more sparsely, but I wanted a fuller look with multiple colors.

That’s it. Making this DIY Flower Petal Garland was super simple, yes, but after making only six, I quickly saw why that price tag was so high! These puppies take a really long time to thread! Sure, in retrospect, I could have made mine more sparse, like hers, but that wasn’t the look I was shooting for. I was designing a garden tea party, so I wanted everything overly and densely flowery. I tested out the techniques on a bag of white flower petals from Dollar Tree and one bag made one garland strand and took several hours to make. The others were made from a huge $12 bag of multi-colored petals and one bag made four garland strands. Those took even longer because they have probably twice the number of petals as the white ones. I’d say this was a Pinterest nail, and I ‘d definitely make these again, but with fewer petals per strand.

This project reminded me of the Rustic Circle Garland I made a couple of years ago and now I’m wondering what sewn petal garland would look like…hmm. If you’d love to see even more DIY party decoration ideas to inspire you, Favecrafts has so many fun and cute ideas!

  1. How I love this!! Even I can ‘sew’ this much. And what a beautiful end result. I am thinking I could make leis for my granddaughters when they come for swims. And decorate my pergola with this garland. Pinned and anxious to try it myself.

  2. Kudos to you for sticking with this. Don’t think I would have the stamina. Makes me wonder about tissue paper and whether there’s a way to make a layered petal and sew through the layers? Looks amazing by-the-way. I would use for spring decor after the party!

    1. Ha! Well, notice I only made a few of them, lol. I wanted to make more but I had to move on to the giant flowers. Great idea, I should put them on my “spring tree” with all the flowers.

  3. The flower petals make a very pretty garland! So pretty for spring! I’ve not seen faux petals in such pretty spring colors, I’ll have to do a little searching for them on line. Pinning to share.

    1. Laurie, I found this big bag in one of those discount floral/ pottery/ decor stores in the floral, not wedding, section. Most petals I’ve found seem to be geared towards weddings and are only in one color. The fabric on these is really nice, too.
