Decorate Wooden Eggs with Glitter Vinyl

I have to admit I have a slight addiction to buying cute wooden shapes for all of the different holidays. That would be fine if I actually used all of them for crafts, lol. I bought the wooden eggs I’m using for this particular project two years ago, but you can easily find egg shapes at Target or your local big craft stores. Since I’m making these for the Bling on the Crafts Craft Blog Hop, they, of course, had to be maximum level sparkly. The technique I use takes advantage of the vinyl’s negative space we usually throw out, making this a slightly different take. So let me show you how to Decorate Wooden Eggs with Glitter Vinyl.

Decorate Wooden Eggs with Glitter Vinyl Steps

1. Paint the front and sides of the wooden eggs with the pearlized white paint. I painted two coats. We’ll work on the vinyl while the paint dries. The paint really does give off a nice sheen and is a much better choice paired with the glitter than plain white.

2. In Cricut Design Space, start a new project and add images from the Easter 2010 Cartridge. I used the “Happy Easter” “Bunny” and “Chick” images. I’ve also saved my project as “Happy Easter Eggs” if you want to just use that.

3. Click on the little eyes on the far right to remove the extra layers so you just have silhouettes of the images.

4. Resize the images so they fit onto each different sized egg. I chose to put “Happy Easter” on the largest egg and the chick on the smallest egg.

5. Measure the height and width of each egg. Cut a vinyl piece for each egg, making it at least one inch bigger than the egg measurements. I used three different colors of vinyl.

6. Cut your images on the glitter vinyl, one image for each color vinyl. When you get to the screen with the mat info, you will need to set the material size to the closest size you cut for each color and then move and place the image where you want it to cut and show on the egg. I placed mine slightly below the vertical center. I’d cut the words twice. You just cut and then without ejecting mat, cut again.

Tip: Don’t forget to set your dial to custom and then Glitter Vinyl for the best results.

7. Weed out the shapes and words. Remember, this is the opposite of what you’d usually do. If you can save the cuts for another project, even better. No way was I able to!

8. Carefully peel your “negative space” cuts from the vinyl backing and place each one over your wooden eggs where you’d like them, probably centered. I’d start at one end and use a scraper to gradually smooth it down and smooth out any bubbles. The two animal silhouettes were easy to place on the egg, but that “Happy Easter” was a beast and it took me an hour.

9. Turn each egg over, glitter side down, on top of a cutting mat. Take your X-acto knife and slice off the vinyl overhang all around the perimeter of the egg. Try to keep your edges smooth and not jagged.

That’s it! Everything for this project was relatively simple except for weeding the words. That was zero fun. I recommend using some of the tips out there for making weeding glitter vinyl easier. Like this one.  All in all, though, learning to Decorate Wooden Eggs with Glitter Vinyl was a great experience. Plus I had never tried the whole using the negative space thing instead, and I’m pleased with the results. This project would also work for all sorts of holidays and shapes or even for regular decor, I think. What would you decorate with glitter vinyl?

  1. I love love love these! I just got my cricut for Christmas and I still a often at a loss as to what to do with it. I am pretty good at using both my image and the negative for a project so I have that going for me but it’s more coming up with materials other than just paper and cardmaking that I need to work on. Pinned.

  2. As always I am very much in love with the outcome of your project. I love the concept of using the negative vinyl. And maybe even the positive part, too, for another project. Pinning this for later.

  3. These are awesome! I never thought about using vinyl like that. I always think about cutting the words out, but not using it for the background. I love the pearlized psint too. Great project!

  4. I love your sparkly glittery eggs. Plus how can you pass up a cute wooden shapes?? I never can. This is a great idea of how to use the vinyl, very creative. I need to go find some wooden eggs.
