Easy No-Sew Leather-Look Pouches

Whether you’re having a pirate party, a Lord of the Rings party or even a make-believe adventure, these easy no-sew pouches are perfect for you. They’re made of “leather-look” ultra suede fabric, which you can usually find at any fabric store. Ultra suede is normally self-healing, so you won’t need to worry about the edges fraying.

Materials

  • 1/2 Yard of 60″ ultra suede fabric (yields approx. 5 pouches)
  • Ruler
  • Sharp Scissors

Step 1: Cut the fabric into five 12″ x 12″ squares. Save the remaining fabric for the drawstrings. Tip: first cut a piece 12″ x 60″ (the width of the fabric), then you only have to cut five 12″ segments, leaving pieces long enough to cut strips.

Pouch Step 1

Step 2: For each 12″ x 12″ square, fold it in half, then in half again so you have a 6-inch square of fabric with four layers. Cut all four layers on a curve, so the finished product looks like a cone, as pictured below.

Pouch Step 2

Step 3: Unfold the fabric and cut 12 evenly spaced slits around the edge. Each slit should be 1/2″ from the edge and no more than 1″ long. Repeat for the remaining circles of fabric.

Pouch Step 3

Step 4: Cut the remaining fabric into 1/2″ x 24″ strips. Each bag will need two 24″ strips.

Pouch Step 5

Step 5: Weave the first 24″ strip through all the slits and tie the ends together. Starting on the opposite side of the bag, weave the second 24″ strip through the slits, but go the opposite direction this time and tie those ends together. You shouldn’t have two strips sitting on top of each other.

Pouch Step 6

Step 6: Pull the two knotted ends of the strips and the fabric should bunch into a pouch. Repeat for each pouch.

Pouch Step 7

Now you just need to fill them with some treasure! My son has filled his with various rocks and gems. This pattern can also be easily adapted to make cute pouch purses.
